What Is SEO

SEO (or Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or web page in search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. These are ‘natural’ or ’organic’ searches which are un-paid, i.e. you don’t pay the search engine a fee for the position you achieve.

There are two types of SEO; ‘On Page’ and ‘Off Page’. We always include On Page SEO as part of the build process.

On Page SEO

On Page SEO is all about improving the content of the website, for example using the right words to describe what you do, adding those words in the right places on your site and using images correctly so they can been seen and recognised by search engines.

Knowing what the right words are is an important factor in getting this right. The starting point is to think about what words someone might use when they start a search in Google and co for your type of business or organisation. If you are looking for a plumber in Brighton, you might well start a search in Google by entering the words ‘plumber in Brighton’. If these words appear on a website, that website will be listed in Googles search results. Where the site is listed in the search results i.e. on page 1 of Google or on a lower page, is dependant on a number of things including where the words appear on the site and in what context, the age of the site, how often it is updated, how many visitors the site gets etc.

Off Page SEO

Off Page SEO is the work done away from your site that impacts the site. For example linking your social media to the website – encouraging your Facebook friends or Twitter followers to visit your website by adding posts that link to the website. Another way is to create a profile for your business or organisation on directory websites like,, Thomson Local etc and include a link to your website as part of your profile. The more links to your website from other websites that are considered reputable and the more visitors your site gets, the higher it will be ranked by search engines as they will view it as a popular site.

What’s Next?

One thing to remember, SEO is not an over night process. Unless you are willing to pay for advertising space, there is no magic wand that will put you at the top of page one of Google just like that. It takes time and effort. We will implement On Page SEO during the build and any future amends we make to the site e.g. new content or images and you can continue with Off Page SEO through social media and directory link building.

"nifty website designers have helped our company to take off at a speed we could not have anticipated. They have shown saint like patience with the little understanding we have with the workings of websites and internet marketing in general. They have worked and been readily on call at weekends and late into the evening and their enthusiasm for the project was inspiring. I would highly recommend them to any company be it a start-up or a mature operation.”
