Google Adwords – Pay Per Click

Why Advertise on Search Engines?

Your website will appear at or near the top of page 1
You only pay a fee when a visitor lands on your website
You can target your adverts by keywords & location
Adverts appear when you want them to
You control how much you spend by click and by day
The majority of internet users start with a search engine

There are four types of website traffic – ‘Search Engine’, ‘Direct’, ‘Social’, & ‘Referral’. Search Engine traffic are visitors that find your website in a search engine. Direct traffic are visitors that typed in your website address. Social traffic are visitors that clicked to your site via social media and Referral traffic are visitors that arrive on your site having clicked through from another website or an email.

Statistics show that approx. 60% of website traffic landing on business websites come from search engines, approx. 20% is direct traffic, 10% is referral traffic and 5% is social traffic. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are not as widely used for business advertising and promotion but social traffic to businesses is growing. It is important when promoting a website to use every tool at your disposal and in an ideal world you will be driving traffic to your site from all four sources.

Getting The Most From Search Engines

Where your website appears in search engine rankings is determined by a number of factors including:
the age of the website?
what content does it contain and is this content ‘optimised for search’?
how often is the website updated?
how many visitors does it get?
is there any back-links to the site from other reputable sites?

Search engines use complicated and super secret algorithms to crunch all of this information and more when deciding where to rank your website verses everyone else’s.

Ideally you want your website to appear on page 1 of all search engine listings but this takes time to achieve naturally. Paying for advertising space on search engines is the quickest way to get your website listed at the top of page 1. This is often called ‘Pay Per Click’ and it involves you paying a fee to a search engine when a user clicks on your advert and lands on your website.

Google is the most popular search engine with over 75% of market share, Bing has about 20% market share (and this includes Yahoo as Yahoo search is powered by Bing) with the remaining 5% by much smaller and lesser known search engines.

How Pay Per Click Works

Google, Bing and Yahoo all run advertising programs and they are pretty much the same, you bid on keywords or phrases and when someone uses those words or phrases to search for a website, your website will be listed in the Ads sections at the top of page 1.

The amount you bid on a keyword or phrase determines the position your website achieves, the highest bidder is the one at the very top left. This means bid rates can change every day depending on who is bidding and how much they are prepared to pay. You only pay when the advert is clicked so you are effectively paying for visitors.

Once a visitor is on your site, it’s up to them if they decide to buy or use your services and products. If the site looks good and offers what they want, you will generate contact.

On average a Google advert is clicked on between 1% and 3% of the number of times it appears. So if your Ad appears 1,000 times you can expect between 10 and 30 visits to your website. You only pay when a customer clicks on to your site so if you were paying £1 for each click and there were 20 clicks you would pay £20 for 20 visitors to your site. If enough of these visitors go on to become customers and the amount they spend is high enough, this can be a very cost effective way of generating new business.

What's Next?

We can set up and manage advertising campaigns for you on any or all search engines. We will research the right keywords to bid on and create engaging copy for your adverts that attract the right people and encourage them to click through to your site.

We will monitor progress and produce reports showing how your advert is working, i.e. how many visitors your website has got from the ads, what pages they looked at, how long they stayed on the site etc.

We have used pay per click successfully for our own business and a number of clients and the best way to start is with a test using a small budget across a short period of time.

TESTIMONIALS

"nifty website designers have helped our company to take off at a speed we could not have anticipated. They have shown saint like patience with the little understanding we have with the workings of websites and internet marketing in general. They have worked and been readily on call at weekends and late into the evening and their enthusiasm for the project was inspiring. I would highly recommend them to any company be it a start-up or a mature operation.”
